UNDER THIS SIGN

Abstract

Berat has historically been one of the key centers for the spread of Christianity in Albania. Within its distinctive castle, there are approximately 41 churches (including small chapels). The Castle of Berat also features a statue of Constantine, which is considered a potential location for the staging of the aforementioned theatrical performance.

The fact that Berat preserves a significant number of codices (many of which have been lost over time) further demonstrates its historical importance as a major center of Christianity, from the time of Saint Paul and Constantine to the present day.

The project aims to preserve and revitalize this intangible cultural heritage through a contemporary interpretative approach. The project "Under This Sign" foresees a series of creative and participatory actions aimed at reintroducing knowledge and raising awareness about the spread of Christianity in the world through a contemporary artistic and performative approach.

The innovative aspect of the project lies in the way intangible cultural heritage is translated into a contemporary form through the use of technology, including performing arts, video art, projections, and community participation in the creative process.

Through this initiative, a segment of Constantine’s everyday life is reimagined, highlighting his role in the dissemination of Christianity, alongside the Illyrian population, as a central historical narrative expressed through contemporary performance.
