This initiative was carried out within the framework of the European Union-funded project \u201cHeritage is Our Brand<strong>\u201d,<\/strong>\u00a0led by\u00a0<em>DMO Albania and EU Policy Hub<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Purpose:<\/strong>\u00a0to understand how today\u2019s youth relate to intangible cultural heritage (ICH) \u2013 the songs, dances, dialects, crafts, rituals, and traditions that live through people, not monuments. This was the survey\u00a0<strong>first<\/strong>\u00a0of this kind in Albania, and the findings provide a valuable insight into how the younger generation understands, values, and experiences heritage. \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a95884 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1a95884\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a22b61a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a22b61a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Curious and Engaged Generation<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f29a99 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0f29a99\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30eb734 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"30eb734\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The survey showed that young people in Albania care about their heritage. <strong>Over 80%<\/strong> They expressed that preserving traditions is important for national identity. Many of them want more cultural content in education and value the significance of local customs for the community and tourism.<\/p><p>However, even though interest is high, knowledge is uneven. <strong>Only 58% of<\/strong> participants correctly defined what is called intangible heritage, <strong>while about 20%<\/strong> mistakenly also included archaeological ruins \u2013 an example of how ICH is often misunderstood. Songs, dances, and traditional dialects are the most recognized forms of ICH, while craftsmanship and the practices listed by UNESCO, <strong>such as Xhubleta and Transhumance,<\/strong> receive less attention \u2013 even in the areas where they originate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22ba81a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"22ba81a\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b79c596 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b79c596\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Schools and Education: A Missed Opportunity<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11847e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"11847e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The role of the education system in promoting ICH appears limited. Most young people have visited museums, but few have experienced folk tales, traditional games, or hands-on cultural activities. Two-thirds reported that they are not part of any cultural or artistic club at school. While some schools in Tirana offer more activities, rural and southern areas show lower access.<\/p><p>However, <strong>almost 3 in 4 of<\/strong> young people believe that ICH should have a greater role in school curricula. They want more \u2013 more engagement, more visibility, more creativity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdf511a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cdf511a\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c48294f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c48294f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Family and Grandparents: The Heart of Heritage<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f9cc20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0f9cc20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Where schools may fail, <strong>families \u2013 especially grandparents <\/strong>\u2013 keep traditions alive. Most young people reported that they have learned songs, dances, recipes, and traditional rituals within their families. Dialects are still spoken in many homes, and cultural values continue to be passed down informally.<\/p><p>However, despite this strong role of the family, only <strong>8% of<\/strong> of the participants said they had a family member involved in heritage-related economic activities \u2013 such as crafts, tourism, or guiding. This indicates an untapped potential to turn cultural knowledge into employment opportunities and local development.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6e1b2d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c6e1b2d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c186a14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c186a14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Community and Culture: A Complex Picture<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14bec42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14bec42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While festivals and local events still play an important role in cultural life, the presence of professional groups that preserve ICH \u2013 such as folk ensembles or artisan workshops \u2013 is uneven and concentrated in certain regions. In Tirana, for example, young people reported fewer opportunities to engage with living traditions in their community.<\/p><p>Young people overwhelmingly believe that both local and central governments share responsibility for preserving heritage, alongside schools and families. Civil society is also seen as an important actor \u2013 but still underutilized.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-149af8f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"149af8f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c598055 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c598055\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Digital Culture: New Spaces for Old Traditions<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb26d05 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fb26d05\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unsurprisingly, social media is now the main platform for learning about cultural heritage. <strong>TikTok,<\/strong> <strong>Instagram<\/strong> and <strong>YouTube<\/strong> They are used far more than television or school programs to interact with traditional content.<\/p><p>However, <em>awareness of official platforms or digital archives for ICH<\/em> Albanian is very limited <em>low \u2013<\/em> indicating that although culture is being shared online, it does not always come from reliable or comprehensive sources. This presents a strong opportunity for digital initiatives to fill this gap with youth-oriented, accessible, and creative content.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca069a7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"ca069a7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc0e5c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fc0e5c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Do Young People Want?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8fb84f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8fb84f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Throughout the survey, several messages were clear:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>They want more cultural content in education \u2013 not just in books, but in clubs, activities, and projects.<\/li><li>They are seeking more public investment in local culture \u2013 through events, centers, and infrastructure.<\/li><li>They want more opportunities to participate in shaping and promoting cultural identity \u2013 both in person and online.<\/li><\/ul><p>Young Albanians do not see heritage as a relic of the past. They view it as a source of identity, creativity, connection, and even employment \u2013 if the right opportunities and platforms for engagement are created.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7129ff e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f7129ff\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3bc210 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f3bc210\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Way Forward<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37ff8e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"37ff8e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This survey is <strong>a reminder:<\/strong> that young people in Albania are not disconnected from their culture \u2013 they are eager to learn, ready to take action, and open to new ways of connecting with the past.
