The Men’s Lament (Gjama e Burrave)

Abstract

The proposed action is the production of an animated documentary on the tradition of the the Men’s Lament (Gjama e Burrave) in the Dukagjin region, employing expressionist animation and audiovisual elements to convey the emotions and symbolic significance of the ritual.

This project represents an innovative approach that combines contemporary artistic expression with historical and scholarly sources, preserving and promoting Albania’s intangible cultural heritage through a modern, accessible, and emotionally engaging format.

Through animation and music, the documentary communicates collective emotions that cannot be fully expressed through words alone, making it a unique and powerful means of safeguarding, interpreting, and perpetuating this tradition. By bridging heritage and contemporary visual storytelling, the film seeks to create a deeper understanding of the ritual’s cultural, historical, and emotional dimensions for both local and international audiences.
