BALISCA – THE MEMORY THAT AWAKENS THE LAND
Abstract
The story of Illyrian Balisca winea symbol of the Illyrian tradition of viticulture and communal feasting, closely associated with ancient Dyrrachium. The project narrative recounts the memories of a Roman centurion who, through an amphora of Balisca, rediscovers love, the land, and the spirit of Illyrian celebration. Within this story, women are portrayed as the heart of ritual life, while self-restraint and wisdom emerge as collective virtues.
Balisca becomes a bridge between cultures—a living memory that transcends time and space—embodying love, local identity, and a deep respect for nature. Through this narrative, the project highlights the enduring cultural values embedded in the region’s heritage and reinterprets them for contemporary audiences.
The project will culminate in the creation of a public mosaicco-created by the children of the Children’s Cultural Center of Durrës, under the guidance of a professional artist and art educators. The process will be implemented in four phases:
